Final version – wind turbines

Currently there is a lot of discussion in our village about the plans of the city council to install three wind turbines. While walking my dog yesterday I noticed two billboards erected by our local action group that wants to prevent the erection of the windmills. I think it is important that all citizens take part in the debate and this is the reason why I would like to present my opinion on this issue.

On the one hand, I can understand the worries of villagers that these wind turbines will cause a many disadvantages. The sheer size of the windmills will damage our landscape – especially because it is planned to erect them next to a recreation area. People who want to enjoy the beautiful nature to relax in natural surroundings might feel disturbed and in the end decide not to come to our place. Furthermore, these machines cause noise and are a threat to birds which might be killed when colliding with the turning blades. These aspects show that wind turbines will have a negative effect on our environment.

But on the other hand, humans have always interfered in nature by building roads, factories or shopping areas because we want to be mobile, we need jobs and we want to have convenient shopping facilities. Above all, we need energy for our comfortable way of life. During the last decades it has become obvious that the forms of energy which we use on a large scale have massive negative impacts on nature. Nuclear catastrophes have devastated large areas, accidents on oil rigs or with oil tankers have polluted the ocean and coastal areas and above all the burning of fossil fuels causes a lot of CO2 which is the main culprit of global warming. If we want to maintain our lifestyle we need huge amounts of energy – and we have to look for clean sources. Wind power does not produce any emissions or any form of waste. The problem is that these machines have to be installed somewhere.

I think our community should make a contribution to green energy production. If everybody shares the hypocritical opinion that green energies are vital, but wind turbines should be erected somewhere else, nothing will change. Therefore I support the plan to erect wind turbines next to our village, because this decision shows that our village is willing to shoulder responsibility.
